Email marketing is no doubt the most sought after tactic for online promotion - it's quick, cost-effective and has a wide reach. It's also true that most inboxes are flooded with marketing emails, so it's important to hit the right note and make a mark that makes you stand out as different from fellow marketers.
Here are some "don'ts" that you should keep in mind:
1. Don't Use noreply@domain.com in Email Header
Never use From/Reply to Email - noreply@domain.com. Avoid the phrase "Do not reply". Email is not a one-way street. It's important to provide an email address on which recipients can contact you. Also ‘From Name' and ‘From Email' should be consistent so that messages are not filtered out.
2. Avoid a Single Image or Image-Only Email Template
Mail filters are more likely to block an image-only email, as it looks spammy. They are more likely to land in the "Junk" folder. Avoid image heavy templates. It's important to have some text (as text) in an email template. Otherwise if a recipient does not choose to display images, all they'll see is a blank email. While using images, include alt text. It's important to ensure that the actual size images are uploaded for an email template. Simply resizing a large image in the HTML code can result in a distorted template. Always use the absolute path for image files.
3. Don't Use JavaScript or Background Images
This can cause image rendering issues in some email clients including Outlook. It is best avoided.
4. Don't Spam
Often unsolicited email equals spam. Every time a mailing list is purchased it is to send unsolicited email. Even when mailing your customer base, if you send too many emails per week it can be a real turnoff. Spam filters consider the excessive use of CAPITALIZATION and exclamation marks spammy as well.
5. Don't Forget to Test
Check the template thoroughly before you hit the "Send" button. Crosscheck if the image alt tags show up when images are disabled. Test the personalization tags included in your template. Ensure that your Call-To-Action button is linked to the right landing page. Spell-check your content for any typos or grammatical errors. Also test your email in various ISPs, email clients and mobile platforms to check how they render in each of them.
